Should I Keep It Or Throw It Away - Your Guide to Decluttering
You might be reading this because you’ve started decluttering and have come to a roadblock. In your hands is something you’re in two minds about. Should you keep it just in case? Should you give it away to someone else? How about taking it apart and selling it for its parts?
It can be difficult to decide if you should keep or get rid of your items, especially if they are costly or have some sentimental value. Or perhaps, you’re just not much of a “thrower”; to you, it’s a waste to throw things away.
These thoughts (or *cough* excuses) can make it challenging and also frustrating when you’re trying to edit your space.
It is, however, necessary to pare down the number of items you have before you organise, so that you’re only keeping things that are serving you. At the end of your organising journey, you should only keep what fits into the space that you have.
You might also be wondering, “What if I need it in the future?”
If you have not used it for some time, it is unlikely that you’re going to be needing it anytime soon. In fact, someone else might be able to put it to better use!
Still feeling stuck? Our quick and easy decluttering guide may help.
Simply ask yourself these 3 questions:
If you’ve answered at least 1 yes, keep it! Review the item again in 6 months and if you haven’t used it in that time, you are not likely to need it. If it still holds some sentimental value, keep it in a separate box with other memorabilia.
If the answers are all NO, you should get it out of your house!
Where should they go then?
If the item is not in good condition, consider recycling before throwing it away if possible. If it is still in good condition, check out our donation list for places that would appreciate your preloved items! You can also check out apps like Olio or Carousell to give away and sell your items respectively.
